Metroid Icons Vol. 1: Energy Tank, Bomb, Varia Suit, and Morph Ball.

My first little volume of Metroid icons is now available! These icons were inspired by some of the artwork in the NES original's instruction manual, as well as others in the series. I hope to release more of these small icon sets in the future, from all kinds of gaming-related series, so check back in for more later! If you have a series or set you’d like to see made, drop me an email or hit me up on Twitter.

Included are .ICNS files for OS X, as well as 512px squared PNG versions for use on all other systems. More information available in the Read Me PDF.

If you enjoy them and feel like tipping me a buck or two of encouragement, I would be immensely grateful. I can accept donations or tips via Square’s Cash.me (U.S. only) or PayPal.me.

Thank you and enjoy!

Portfolio Update: Emojipedia.org's Mockups for Unicode 9.0 Proposals

Proposed Unicode 9 emoji mockups: fox face, cowboy smiley, face palm, and bacon! Mmm, bacon.

Proposed Unicode 9 emoji mockups: fox face, cowboy smiley, face palm, and bacon! Mmm, bacon.

I updated my portfolio today to include a really fun project I just wrapped up. Emojipedia, a popular emoji wiki, gave me the opportunity to create emoji mockups based on the Unicode 9.0 emoji proposals, which likely won't be implemented by OS vendors until 2016.

What was particularly fun about this project is that it required adhering to Apple's visual aesthetic as closely as possible, sometimes in reproducing characters, but also in envisioning how the company might visually implement particular references from the proposal. The way in which Apple implements shape, texture, and motion are pretty consistent, but the styles sometimes varied, which made it really fun to play with.

Emojipedia was hard at work this past Friday, July 17, promoting its popular proposed World Emoji Day on Twitter, and lots of people got involved with ideas and celebration—companies, sports teams, publishers, and regular folks alike. There was even a NY Times article about it! Emojipedia will trickle out more candidates over time, but for now you can vote on them at emojivote.com.

Head on over to the portfolio page and check it out!

MindFad.com Returns

MindFad.com has returned. That which was lost is now found once more, or something to that effect.

I must give a shoutout to my friend Tim who generously went out of his way to help me re-acquire the mindfad.com domain. I had foolishly allowed it to lapse in the late-2000s and it was lost for some years, but I am once again the proud, true owner! Thank you, mister. I shan’t let it lapse again.
